Synagogue Skills: Havdallah Immersion with Rabbi Marisa James

Mondays, 6:30-7:30 PM, via Zoom

Dates: November 11, 18, 25 & December 2, 9, 16

The short service that ends Shabbat is also one of the most beautiful ritual moments, engaging all of the senses. In this havdallah immersion, we’ll learn the texts of havdallah AND learn how to lead the ritual.

You’ll deepen your personal experience of ushering out Shabbat and welcoming in a new week, and also develop the skills to lead havdallah for your friends, family, and community.

No prior prayerbook experience or Hebrew proficiency required to take this class.

Laws and Customs of the Mezuzah with Rabbi Mike Moskowitz

Monday through Thursday, 9:15am-10:00am, via Zoom

This class will begin with Maimonides texts around the laws of the mezuzah and move ahead in time to modern practices. Our focus will be on the intentional presence of space.

The Spirituality of the Friday Night Service with Rabbi Yael Werber

Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00 PM, Hybrid (In-Person/Zoom)

Dates: November 12, 19, 26 & December 3, 10, 17

Come take a deep dive into the Friday night service. This class will include writing your own interpretive prayers and finding your own meaning in Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv.

This course is required for Adult B* Mitzvah Students. This course is open to all, regardless of Hebrew proficiency, or previous knowledge of Jewish text. All are welcome!

Returning to Genesis with Miya Rotstein

Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00 PM, Hybrid (In-Person/Zoom)

Dates: November 12, 19, 26 & December 3, 10, 17

Bereshit, It’s the book we turn to again and again for its classic stories and character studies. In this class, we will study the weekly parsha alongside contemporary commentators and midrashists with a focus on small group discussion and text study.

This class is open to all, regardless of Hebrew proficiency, or previous knowledge of Jewish text. All are welcome!

Intro to Talmud with Rabbi Mike Moskowitz

Tuesdays, 7:30-8:30 PM, In-Person

Dates: November 12, 19, 26 & December 3, 10, 17

In this introductory level Talmud class, we will start at the beginning of Tractate Pesachim, which focuses on the searching for unleavened bread the night before Passover.

This class will be taught in person only, Beit Midrash style. No experience necessary, All are welcome!

High Def Rainbows & Black Hats: LGBTQ & Jewish Representation on the Small Screen with Rabbi Jason Klein

Tuesdays, 7:30-8:30 PM, Hybrid (In-Person/Zoom)

From Giti Weiss on "Shtisel" to Asher Wolke on “The Good Doctor,” complex Jewish characters have taken center stage on television.

This multimedia class will explore and discuss how, in recent years, LGBTQ+ people, Jewish people, Queer Jews, and allies have been depicted and represented and why it matters.

Intro to Hebrew with Miya Rotstein

Wednesdays, 6:00-7:15 PM, via Zoom

Dates: November 13, 20, 27 & December 4, 11, 18

This is an introduction to Hebrew with a focus on letters and vowels. We will be using the ‘Aleph isn’t Tough’ textbook series to guide us through the process of phonetic Hebrew decoding.

Along the way, we will also learn some basic Hebrew grammar and root words that will help us to understand the words of the Siddur. This class is for novice and beginner Hebrew learners.

Intro to Hebrew (Part 2) with Miya Rotstein

Wednesdays, 7:30-8:45 PM, via Zoom

Dates: November 13, 20, 27 & December 4, 11, 18

In this class, we will be using the second book in the series, ‘Aleph isn’t Enough’ to continue our study of Prayerbook Hebrew.

This Advanced Beginner level class will be focused more on Hebrew grammar, vocabulary and understanding the prayers and blessings in our Siddur. You must be able to read and decode Hebrew to take this class.
