Va'etchanan: Moses's Death Story
Continue to explore the poignant, fantastical, and compelling stories associated with Moses’s death and his fear over the loss of his legacy. This course will deep dive into midrashim and commentaries focused on Moses’s final hours and moments. No prior experience required.
Jewish Art
What is Jewish art? Does it even make sense to talk about it as a collective whole? Over the course of six weeks, this class will survey Jewish art and craft traditions across time, place, and media. From Babylon to Belarus, distant past to present day, we will look at ancient mosaics, medieval manuscripts, modern paintings, and much more.
Conversational Hebrew
Conversational Hebrew is open to beginner students who are already reading-ready. If you have some familiarity or have taken any Modern Hebrew class prior, this class may be too basic for you. We will be using a textbook, reading aloud and practicing conversations together. The class will cover Hebrew language basics including gendered nouns, pronouns, adjectives, the present tense etc, and develop some basic sentence skills and vocabulary! Please purchase the following textbook online in preparation for this 6 week on-line class. Class participation is a requirement for this class!
A Taste of Mussar
We Jews have a storied tradition of inheriting midot—measures of our character—from one generation to the next. The practice of mussar challenges us to align our values with our behaviors by living with just the right balance of individual midot such as lovingkindness, humility, or patience. This six week “taste” is an opportunity to begin looking at texts and exploring practices that pique our curiosity and make us more mindful.
Crying Out for Redemption
Crying out for redemption: as a Jewish people, we have lived and loved through times of struggle and uncertainty while longing for a very different future. Our tradition names this desire geulah, longing for redemption. What can our tradition of longing offer us in times of personal and political struggle? We will immerse in Jewish texts and music longing for a world redeemed, with time for personal and creative reflection.
